One question so I can mentally prepare for this… are we in Ascending or Descending Order this year…?
~~~
It is, in fact, a year of Descending Pattern. One may ask: “Why? It’s an ‘odd’ year, it stands to reason that it should be an Ascending Pattern year”. Due to the legacy and heritage of BSM, that is not the case. Next up: “Never Say Die!”.
Although, there was talk of beginning this year with the new album, entitled “13”, it is not due out until June.
Perhaps its for the best.
Debuting with something “new” may include it into the heritage, and whether it’s truly canonical is yet to be determined.
While listening to the Parliament classic “There is Nothing Before Me But Thang” just now, I came across a Suggested Video by Cactus. The accompanying photo looks just like Led Zeppelin, so as I am typing this I am listening to their version of Bukka White’s perfect “Parchman Farm Blues” cover. As Bukka White’s version is perfect, it is not better, but I have to say, Cactus sounds pretty fucking good to me. Is anyone else in the Now Today Society familiar with their stuff? They do sound like Led Zep a bit, but from the little I have heard to this point, seem to have a slightly more muscular, American feel to them. Kind of like Detroit-ish, hints of Stooges / MC-5 kind of vibe. And I was struck, as I write this from a Monastery, how truly monastically appropriate one line in particular is from the Parliament song:
I’ve learned to live
And to give is to live
When there is nothing before you but thang
– “There Is Nothing Before Me But Thang”
How brave of thee, Brother Jerome, to play footsies with the threat of a Blizzard and go to work! I was told Civilization would be closed until further notice.
I can’t speak of others, within the Society, but I must confess a poverty in my music knowledge.
Clearly more time must be dedicated to The Circle Game.
As a follow-up on Cactus: Pretty darn good. My personal favorties so far seem to be from the album “One Way ……Or Another”. A song on that album, called “Feel So Bad” is excellent and seems to have a companion song from the album, “Cactus” called “Feel So Good”. As Bad Times often lead to better art, I’d give the nod to “Feel So Bad”. “Big Mama Boogie” is smokin. And – this may be important to NTS brethren- Cactus seems to have the Johnnie Walker Striding Man Society seal of approval, as another song on youtube by Cactus has as the visual the Striding Man JW logo, adapted with a guitar rather than a walking stick.
And the title of that JW-sanctioned song?
“Rock N Roll Children”
The Good Times.
The BSM timeline document is a significant piece on many fronts. For the archivists and biographers, it makes their future work easier, as the earliest years are often the most difficult to ascertain. This factual, “from the source” document allows for historians and philosophers and professors to more easily delve into the motives, deeper meanings, esoteric significance, symbolism, and conspiracies that keep history alive. For the adherents and disciples, genuine source documents to establish rites, while simultaneously opening the door for schisms, rebellions, and heretics. And for the inevitable time travellers, it gives an accurate “insertion date” so as these Good Times continue to exist in infinity, enthusiasts can join in at the right time, and not for example, on an “off-Monday” when less honorable or thrilling events may be taking place. So, save a place at the Bickford’s table! Bravo!
